Being within the tropics the Bazaruto Archipelago never gets cold, but on some evenings during the winter months of June and July a light jacket or pullover may be necessary. For the rest of the time, swimming costumes and light tropical wear are all you need. The summer months of November through to February can be extremely hot. This is also the rainy season, though storms seldom last long..

King Mackerel Definitely the most abundant species in these waters, the king mackerel abounds year round and takes most varieties of bait. Averaging 15lbs, very large crocodiles up to 70lbs (resort record stands at 77lbs) are regularly caught.
Yellowfin Tuna (yellowfin, skipjack & bonito) This is our main target species. Big shoals of tuna move in and out of the area all year round, and a full house strike from these brutes makes for some exciting fishing indeed. Average size tuna taken out is between 10kg to 20kg, with some in the 30kg to 35kg range coming out every now and then.
Kingfish Locally known as “Ignobilis”, the sheer power of this fish is unparalleled and it is known for bending hooks, breaking leaders and snapping lines. Present year round, being an extremely aggressive predator and frequently attaining sizes in excess of 70lbs (island record is around 90lbs) makes them one of the most sought after quarry of any serious fisherman.
Additional Species The area is also very popular for the sheer quantity of its year round game fishing. Amongst the most common game fish species are:
• KINGFISH (over 12 different species)
• GREAT BARRACUDA & SEA PIKE
• QUEEN MACKEREL (Natal Snoek)
• QUEENFISH
• POMPANO
• PRODIGAL SON
• JOBFISH, ETC
*We do not to target bottom fish due to conservation reasons*
Marlin Bazaruto is famous for its giant black marlin as numerous fish passing the 1000lb mark are caught. Blue and striped marlin are also present in these waters and the few boats which have recently explored deeper waters with fast trolled lures, have had very encouraging results. Marlin season runs from September to April, with October to December being peak season.
Sailfish The area might be famous for its black marlin, but Bazaruto’s winter run of sailfish probably attracts the most anglers to these waters. These acrobatic fish, which can attain 130lbs and average around 70lbs, have been caught year round, although they are much more prolific between mid-May to mid-October.
Wahoo Known to achieve speeds of over 70 km/h, these bullet-shaped fish are present all year round with a peak in the early summer months of September to November. In these waters, Wahoo average around 40lbs, but bigger fish are frequently caught, with the resort’s record standing at 68lbs.
Dorado Colourful as a rainbow, this hard fighting fish takes into the air when hooked, providing a breathtaking spectacle. Bulls over 40lbs are normally caught from September to April, mostly using fast trolling lures. The resort record stands at 61lbs.

GAME FISHING
Being on the very edge of the deep Mozambique Channel, Bazaruto is Africa’s most productive area for Marlin (Black, Blue and Striped) and Sailfish as well as warm water game fish such as Giant Kingfish, Wahoo, King Mackerel, Dorado and Bonito. October to March are the prime Marlin months with June to September being best for Sailfish. Many other species of fish are caught all year round.

No bottom fishing allowed from the boats. Terminal tackle must be brought along or can be bought at the Lodge. (Limited stock available.)
BIRD LIFE
The shores fringing the island are a paradise for plovers, sandpipers and other wading birds. Thousands of Palearctic migrants cram the shallow waters during the summer months and a keen eye and a good pair of binoculars will reveal many rarities among them. Terns, flamingos, egrets, kingfishers, cormorants and even the occasional Openbilled Stork forage close to the shore at low tide. Of the migrant bird-hunting falcons, only the Peregrine and European Hobby have so far been recorded,
but the rarer Eleanora’s and Sooty Falcons may be expected. A good variety of birds occur in the savannah and grasslands.
WALKS
Walking trails could lead visitors to interesting areas such as mangrove communities, freshwater lakes and turtle nests. For those who like a challenge, a walk up to the lighthouse is a must. And with the crossing over sand dunes so high and vast, you feel you are in the middle of a desert, but surrounded on all sides by tropical ocean is an experience never to be forgotten.
